DREAMS PLAGUED HER, no longer corralled by the damn near impenetrable mental walls she once maintained meticulously. They skipped over the ruins, kicking aside shattered chunks of her self-worth and failing independence in their rush to bring her to her knees.

She clung to the last vestiges of reality, clawing to reach the pinprick of light before darkness closed in over her head, filling her lungs with the cloying scent of death, smothering her in the inevitability of losing not only her life but feeling her mind slip away into nothingness first.

“What’s a pretty little poppet like you doing all alone in a place like this?”

An icy shard of glass pierced her stomach, gutting her quickly and efficiently with every softly-spoken word. That voice...winter and hell combined. She tasted sulphur in her mouth as past words tripped off her tongue. “I’m new to all this. Just here to look around, I guess, and see if there’s something that interests me.”

God, how naïve she’d been. Wheedling her way into a BDSM club—no doubt the bouncer had regarded her as a novice piece of ass when she’d used her looks and blatantly obvious innocence to gain entry—without letting anyone know where she was, without understanding how the dynamics of the lifestyle could be twisted, perverted in the wrong hands.

“Why don’t you let me show you around? I’m sure I can find something to pique your curiosity.” Dream James clamped a hand around hers, gave her no option but to follow him through the throng of people toward a set of stairs. “The best thrills are found downstairs.”

She’d followed along like a lost lamb, Allix remembered, unable to stop herself from taking the same path through the nightmare. Only this time, there was no pull of attraction to the tall, white-blond sadist with glacier-blue eyes. No thrum of excitement coursing through her blood at the idea of exploring this side of her.

In dreams, she screamed at her younger self to free herself of his grip, to run as fast and as far away from him, from this place, as she could. To not go down those stairs to the hell waiting for her there.

“My name is James, but you will call me Master.”

The first flicker of doubt, of uncertainty. Too little, too late to save her from what was to come. Descending the shadowed stairs into a corridor echoing with cries and noises designed to send shivers down her spine, she spied more than one club monitor giving her pitying looks as they passed but she only dropped her eyes to the rich red carpet.

Run, you stupid girl, Allix shouted. Trapped between the nightmare and her foolish self of times past, she yanked at her hair. If she had a knife, she’d plunge it into the ramrod-straight spine of the man leading her to her demise. Save yourself. Open your eyes and see him for what he truly is.

“James. Haven’t seen you down here for a while.” A gorilla of a man stopped their progress by planting his bulk in front of the monster.
